Lyrics
📝
Autism’s a personal subject for me. I’ve a little kiddo on the spectrum. This song’s our story as told from 2 perspectives, simultaneously: It’s written from my kiddo’s POV, but at the same time it’s also mine, both trying to understand the other. Navigating emotions, language, and context are some the biggest challenges. Nuances are sometimes lost… Routine is how we thrive, but my kiddo’s also one of the most perceptive & receptive ppl. I know.
Autism is so many things, for so many; my hope is that all roads can lead to a place of comfort & safety.

[Verse 1]
Your world spins faster than I can
I try to catch up but I can’t…
I'm learning to listen, I'm learning to feel
But the truth is:
my truth isn’t always what is real…
[Chorus]
Am I doing this right?
Am I getting it wrong?
The world feels heavy
but I try holding on
What I grasp is askew…
If only you knew…
All I want is to understand you
[Verse 2]
I see the world in colors you don’t understand
But you look at me sometimes like I’m a… (yeah)
I’m just a puzzle of pieces you don’t have
But you and I are the same when we cry or we laugh
[Verse 3]
Silence for me is never silent, not like you
When you look and shake your head at me, do I seem blue?
Each glance can be a riddle, each word can feel so loud…
I'm safe in my quiet, but lost in your crowd
[Chorus]
Am I doing this right?
Am I getting it wrong?
The world feels heavy
but I try holding on
What I grasp is askew…
If only you knew…
All I want is to understand you
[Verse 4]
My brain is like a prism reflecting light,
But it’s also like roots, tangled under the grass…
Your thoughts run vertical, point A to B
My thoughts run diagonal and horizontally
I try to connect, you want me to speak…
But the wifi is blotchy, connection is weak
[Bridge]
I stumble You worry; You fear I won’t belong
I wonder in silence “What’s even wrong?”
But then I forget, move on with my day…
It’s a world you can’t fix, I just know it this way
[Reprised Chorus]
Am I doing this right? (Could he)
Am I getting it wrong? (Possibly)
The world feels heavy
but I try holding on
(I do a cartwheel)
(I count backwards from ten)
(It’s the way it makes me feel)
(I can’t write with a pen)
What I grasp is askew…
If only you knew…
(I am just me)
All I want is to understand you
All I want is for you
to understand me too
[end]
