Lyrics

Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (22 February 1857 – 1 January 1894) was a German physicist who first conclusively proved the existence of the electromagnetic waves proposed by James Clerk Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism. In every electromagnetic field theory or microwave engineering book that I studied, there is a section in the introduction dedicated to Hertz. Just like Mozart did in music, Hertz 37 year short life sparked the significant revolution in modern science and engineering history. The value of life is not about how long we live and what kind of attention we received in social media, but it is about what we will leave for the future generation!

Kup-fer-draht, ei-ne Spu-le /

„Mal sehn’, ob das Ding funk-t, coo-le!“ /

Zwei Me-tall-ku-geln, klei-ner Spalt, /

Er dreht den Strom — es knis-tert bald! /

„Hei-li-ge Blit-ze!“ ruft er laut, /

„Da springt ein Fun-ke, schaut, schaut, schaut!“ //

Chorus 1 – F – G – Am – E

🎵 Zapp! Zapp! Der Di-pol singt, /

Un-sicht-ba-re Wel-len, der Ä-ther klingt! /

Kein Ka-bel weit und breit

Draht-los ge-bo-ren in je-ner Zeit! //

(2-bar guitar fill – distortion bend)

Verse 2 – Am – G – F – E

Stu-den-ten flüs-tern: „Was riecht so?“ /

„Der Prof macht Blit-ze, oh-oh-oh!“ /

Doch Hertz nur lacht, ruft blitz-ge-schwind: /

„Seht, das sind Wel-len, die da sind!“ /

Er funkt die Luft, sie funkt zu-rück, /

Ein klei-ner Sprung — For-scher-glück! /

Max-well lä-chelt aus dem Licht, /

„Ich hab’s ge-sagt — Phy-sik lügt nicht!“ //

Chorus 2 – crowd chant section

Call: (Wer hat die Wel-le los-ge-macht?) /

Resp: Hertz! Hertz! In sei-ner Nacht! /

Call: (Wer hat den Ä-ther hell ent-facht?) /

Resp: Hertz! Hertz! Der’s mög-lich macht! /

🎵 Zapp! Zapp! Der Di-pol singt, /

Und der gan-ze Him-mel schwingt! /

Von Fun-ken-sprung zu Sa-tel-lit — /

🎵 Zapp! Zapp! Der Di-pol singt, /

Und die gan-ze Welt nun klingt! /

Von Bre-men bis New-York bei Nacht, /

Hat Hertz die Wel-le los-ge-macht! //

(Tag riff repeat 2x with background “Hertz! Hertz!” shouts)

Final Verse – Half-time feel, reflective

Wenn du heut scrollst und Nach-rich-ten schreibst, /

Denk an den Mann, der Fun-ken bleibt, /

Der ers-te Beat, der Ä-ther-klang — /

Hertz, du Ro-cker, das war dein Song! //

Outro – Spoken over fading guitar feedback

„Hertz — du hast den Funken an-ge-las-sen!“ ⚡

(Big final power chord – D major ring out 4 bars)

English Lyrics:

Once upon a time, before Wi-Fi dreams,

Before Bluetooth links and TikTok streams,

There was a man in a German coat,

Who made the airwaves dance and float!

Hertz in his lab

In eighteen eighty-eight, late one night,

Hertz was tinkering by candlelight,

Copper wires, sparks in flight,

He thought, “Let’s make those waves ignite!”

He built two spheres with a tiny gap,

Cranked up the coil, gave it a zap,

He saw a spark jump — “Holy smokes!”

The air just hummed — no wires, no jokes!

The dipole sings,

Dancing waves on invisible strings!

No wires tied, no lines in sight,

Wireless was born that night!

Students whispered, “What’s that smell?”

“Professor Hertz has fried his bell!”

But Hertz just grinned, his eyes alight,

“Gentlemen, waves can travel through night!”

He waved a loop, it sparked again,

Maxwell’s math just proved its friend!

Light, radio — one big clan,

The theory met experiment’s hand!

(Call) Who made the spark that changed the world?

(Response) Hertz, Hertz, the clever nerd!

He didn’t know what he had found,

But he sent a ripple all around!

The dipole sings,

Now the world’s on unseen strings,

From static crack to signal bright,

Wireless was born that night!

He didn’t build a radio show,

Didn’t even make dough,

When they asked, “What’s it for?”

He shrugged, “I don’t know!”

But Marconi heard that sound,

And said, “Let’s send it all around!”

From lab bench spark to ocean call,

Hertz had started it all!

The dipole sings,

Echoing through everything!

From cell phones, planes to satellite,

It all began that night!

Across the sky,

Messages fly and lovers sigh,

Streaming, dreaming, day and night

Wireless was born that night!

So when you scroll or make a post,

Raise a toast to Hertz, the ghost,

The man who sparked the endless flight

Wireless was born that night!

“Hey Hertz, you left your spark gap on!”
