Naxar did not answer.
앨리스가 옆을 보며 물었다.
Alice glanced aside and asked,
“안 듣는 것 같지?”
“Doesn’t it feel like Naxar is ignoring me?”
시간토끼가 말했다.
The Time Rabbit said,

“Yes.”

“I was listening.”
앨리스는 웃었다.
Alice laughed.
“그럼 큰 도마뱀?”

나크사르는 앨리스를 싫어했다.
Naxar disliked Alice.
앨리스들은 다른 얼굴들로 언제나 같은 것들을 말했다.
The Alices always spoke of the same things through different faces.
세계의 균형, 이름의 균열, 붉은 극광, 그리고 천년의 맹약 같은 것들이다.
Things like the balance of the world, cracks in names, the crimson Aurora, and the Thousand-Year Pact.
나크사르는 역대 앨리스들을 기억했다.
Naxar remembered the past Alices.
첫 번째 앨리스는 인간을 너무 사랑했다.
The first Alice loved humanity too much.
죽어야 할 자를 살리고, 무너져야 할 나라를 그대로 두었다.
The first Alice saved those meant to die and left standing kingdoms meant to fall.

시간토끼가 말했다.
The Time Rabbit said,
“흔들렸어.”
“It trembled.”
“왕관이 바뀌었고, 신의 이름 하나가 침묵했어.”
“A crown has changed, and one god’s name has fallen silent.”
“심장은 아직 제자리로 돌아오지 않았지.”
“And the heart has not returned.”
“맹약이 흔들린 거잖아, 이거.”
“So the pact is trembling.”
나크사르는 천천히 몸을 일으켰다.
Naxar slowly rose.
“그 맹약은 앨리스 혼자 묶을 수 없다.”
“That pact cannot be bound by Alice alone.”
“알아. 세계를 구하라는 게 아니야.”
“I know. It is not about saving the world.”
“그럼 무엇을 지키라는 것이냐.”
“Then what must be protected?”
“인간을 지켜.”
“Protect humans.”
나크사르의 눈빛이 낮아졌다.
Naxar’s gaze darkened.
“거절한다.”
“Naxar refuses.”
앨리스가 천진난만하게 물었다.
Alice asked innocently,
“아! 왜?”
“Ah! Why?”
나크사르는 목소리를 낮추었다.
Naxar lowered his voice.
“인간의 편에 서면 안 된다는 것은 앨리스가 더 잘 알 텐데.”
“Alice should know better than anyone that Naxar must not stand with humans.”
그러자 앨리스는 손가락 하나를 들었다.
Then Alice raised one finger.
“하나면 돼.”
“Just one.”
“인간 하나.”
“One human.”
나크사르는 다시 한번 단호하게 말했다.
Naxar spoke firmly once again.
“더더욱 거절한다. 인간은 필멸자다.”
“Then Naxar refuses even more. Humans are mortal.”
“그 인간이 죽으면, 맹약도 깨진다.”
“If that human dies, the pact breaks too.”
하지만 앨리스는 웃으며 나크사르의 말을 끊었다.
But Alice cut Naxar off with a smile.
“그럴 줄 알았지!”
“I knew you would say that!”
“폴리모프.”
“Polymorph.”
“돌려줄게.”
“Alice will return it.”

“Impossible.”
시간토끼가 말했다.
The Time Rabbit said,
“가능해.”
“It is possible.”
나크사르는 대꾸하지 못했다.
Naxar could not answer.
마침내 나크사르가 말했다.
At last, Naxar spoke.
“한 인간이다.”
“One human.”
“좋다. 그 맹약, 받아들이겠다.”
“Fine. Naxar accepts that pact.”
앨리스는 웃었다.
Alice smiled.
“그럼 조건 하나 더.”
“Then one more condition.”
“방금 맹약은 받아들였다.”
“Naxar has already accepted the pact.”
“응. 그래서 지금 말하는 거야.”
“Yes. That is why Alice is saying it now.”
나크사르는 낮게 말했다.
Naxar spoke low.
“역대 앨리스 중 가장 얄밉다.”
“The most irritating Alice of all.”
“티 내면 안 돼.”
“Naxar must not let it show.”
“무엇을?”
“What?”
“네가 나크사르라는 거.”
