Lyrics
This song was inspired by a sudden curiosity about the market value of the axes in the folk tale 'The Gold and Silver Axe,' amid constant news of skyrocketing gold and silver prices. To fully immerse the listener in the story, I incorporated traditional Korean instruments and Pansori-style vocals. Through the final narration calculating the current market price of the golden axe. I delivered a humorous message that 'honesty is, in fact, the best investment strategy.
[Narration]
(Now, children. Gather 'round and peel some tangerines while you listen.)
(It was a day so blue it made your eyes ache.)
(Our woodcutter went up the mountain and started chopping wood...)
[Verse 1]
(Tuk-ttak! Tuk-ttak! (Oops!))
(The sound of chopping wood echoes through the mountains and streams!)
(Whish- Splash!)
(The axe slipped from his hand and went right into the pond!)
(The woodcutter is wailing and beating the ground!)
(Kwagwang- Rumble!)
(With a burst of spray, the Mountain Spirit appeared!)
("Hey there, young man! Why are you crying so sorrowfully?")
(Is it this gold axe? (No, it is not!) Is it this silver axe? (No, it is not!))
(Even the Mountain Spirit is dumbfounded and laughs heartily (Hey!))
("You rascal, do you have any idea how much this is worth in today's market to be saying no!")
(The honest woodcutter just gulps hard)
("Mine is only this rusty iron axe!")
[Verse 2]
(The greedy neighbor heard the rumor)
(Tuk-ttak! Whish- Splash!)
(He threw his axe on purpose and jumped in himself!)
(Flash-!)
("Spirit! That giant gold axe over there is mine! I even wrote my name on it!")
(The Mountain Spirit glares with wide eyes and thunders at him)
("You scoundrel! Is the price of gold a joke to you? What a thief's heart!")
(The woodcutter, with the gold, silver, and even the iron axe)
(Heave-ho! Heave-ho!)
(Is returning home with his arms full)
(The weight is so heavy that sweat pours down like rain)
(Is it the weight of gold, or the weight of honesty!)
((Oh my, it's heavy, so heavy! Eheya!))
(Is it the gold axe? (No, it is not!) Is it the silver axe? (No, it is not!))
(He changed his fortune with nothing but an honest heart (Hey!))
(Everyone in the village is dying of envy)
(Honesty is the best, Eolssigu, how wonderful!)
[Narration]
(Yes, the Mountain Spirit certainly is generous.)
(But children, since that axe was for logging, it must have weighed at least 3kg.)
(I did the math, and isn't the current price of gold 1 million won per 'don'?)
(3kg is roughly 800 'don'... so that's a whopping 800 million won!)
(You have to live honestly later on so the Mountain Spirit will give you 800 million won.)
(Listen to your mother and be honest by doing your homework first, okay?)
