The song tells the Welsh legend of Peregrine of St Dogmaels and the mermaid: he catches her in his fishing net, she pleads for release, he frees her, and she vows to warn him of storms. Later, she saves him from a deadly tempest while the other fishermen perish. The story ends with her eternal bond and the statue at St Dogmaels where sea meets sky.
