Verse 1

אִם לֹא הַיִיתַ קַיָּם,

(If you did not exist,)

לְמָה אֶהְיֶה קַיָּם?

(Why would I exist?)

נַע וָנֵד בְּעוֹלָם רֵיק,

(A wanderer in an empty world,)

בְּלִי תִּקְוָה וּבְלִי חַיִּים.

(Without hope and without life.)

Verse 2

אִם לֹא הַיִיתַ, אַתָּה,

(If you were not, you,)

הָיִיתִי מַמְצִיא אַהֲבָה,

(I would invent love,)

כֵּעִיווֵּר שֶׁמְּדַמְיֵן,

(Like a blind man imagining)

אֶת צִבְעֵי הַיּוֹם.

(The colors of the day.)

Verse 3

אִם לֹא הַיִיתַ, אַתָּה,

(If you were not, you,)

הָיִיתִי רַק עוֹד נְקֻדָּה,

(I would be just another dot,)

בְּעוֹלָם חוֹלֵף לַשָּׁוְא.

(In a passing world, in vain.)

הָיִיתִי מַרְגִּישׁ אָבוּד.

(I would feel lost.)

Verse 4

אִם לֹא הַיִיתַ, אַתָּה,

(If you were not, you,)

כֵּיצַד אֶהְיֶה אֲנִי?

(How could I be me?)

יָכֹלְתִּי לְשַׂחֵק אוֹתָהּ,

(I could play the part,)

אֲבָל לֹא הָיִיתִי עַצְמִי.

(But I would not be myself.)

Verse 5

If you did not exist,

Why would I exist?

A wanderer in an empty world,

Without hope and without life.

Verse 6

If you were not, you,

I would invent love,
