Ein Bach, mit Namen Elster, rinnt
durch Nacht und Nebel und besinnt
inmitten dieser stillen Handlung
sich seiner einstigen Verwandlung,
die ihm vor mehr als tausend Jahren
von einem Magier widerfahren.

Und wie so Nacht und Nebel weben,
erwacht in ihm das alte Leben.
Er fährt in eine in der Nähe
zufällig eingeschlafne Krähe
und fliegt, dieweil sein Bett verdorrt,
wie dermaleinst als Vogel fort.

A brook, the Elster, flows its way
Through night and mist in dark array,
And pauses in this silent scene
To ponder what it once had been;
A transformation, strange and vast,
A magician wrought in ages past.

And as the night and mist entwine,
It feels its ancient life divine.
Into a crow, asleep nearby,
It flows with a prophetic sigh,
And while its bed runs dry, it soars—
The bird it was in days of yore.
