Lyrics
- He Saw You Laugh -
The midnight bell is ringing through my bones
I look below and see the earth give way
A figure white and rattling over stones
I taste the cold before I dare to stay
It sees the living
It hears your breath
You can't stop giving
He saw you laugh at death
He saw you laugh, he saw you laugh
You watched the dead and let yourself go weak
The dead don't sleep
And now it knows exactly what you seek
He saw you laugh
You stood and watched and lost your breath
The dead don't sleep
And watching them is watching death
They come in threes then dozens, filing past
Their dry bones clicking like a drum they beat
I grip the wall and know it cannot last
My breath goes shallow but I won't retreat
It knows your name
You handed it a front seat
He saw you stake your claim
He saw you laugh, he saw you laugh
You couldn't stop, you couldn't turn away
The dead don't sleep
And now it's climbing up to where you stay
You stood and watched and lost your breath
The dead don't sleep
And watching them is courting death
They shed their wrappings, let the cold air in
A hundred hollow sockets, swinging free
And something stirs and rises under my skin
My body laughs before my mind can flee
One stops. One turns. One tilts its skull up high
I feel its empty gaze lock onto mine
The tower wall is all between me and the sky
The turned earth smell has crossed the burial line
What if the dead were always watching back?
What if you laughed because you wanted in
What if the grave was laid as bait and trap?
Then nothing saves you from what you have been
I came to watch, not to be seen
I thought the dead were mine to keep
I never knew what watching means
I laughed before I fell asleep
I forgot that every open eye
Invites another eye to stare
I looked too long... and that is why
The dead were watching me
He saw you laugh, he saw you laugh
You are the watchman, you are what they keep
The dead don't sleep, the dead don't sleep
And neither will you... not one night, not one week
He saw you laugh
You stood and watched and lost your breath
The dead don't sleep
And watching them is being death
The tower is quiet now, the cold has settled in
I carry the turned earth smell through every door
I know now what the watchman's fate has always been
To witness something fully... it will witness more
He saw you laugh
