むかーしむかしお江戸の町に

かわいい男の子が生まれました

八五郎とおかみさん

さあ名前を付けてあげましょう

でも子どもの名前を付けたことがない

どんな名前が良いか分からない

そこでお寺の和尚さんに

名付け親になってもらうことに

八五郎はさっそく和尚さんを訪ね

この子の為に長生きできるようなおめでたい

良い名前を考えて下さい

では経文の中に寿限無というのがある

寿限無とはおめでたいことがずっと続く

まだ他にありませんか

五劫の擦り切れというのがある

天女が三千年に一度下界に降りて

衣で大きな岩をひらりと撫でる

五劫だからその五倍

何千・何億・何兆年と果てしなく

寿限無寿限無五劫の擦り切れ

相手に大きなコブをこしらえて

「うわぁぁぁん！おばちゃん！おばちゃん！」

コブなんかどこにもありゃしねえじゃねえか

すると金ちゃん

あんまり名前が長すぎるから

コブが引っ込んじゃった

お後がよろしいようで

JUGEMU – The Never-Ending Name

Long, long ago, in the bustling town of old Edo,

a sweet baby boy was born.

His proud father Hachigorō and his lovely wife

were ready to give him a name—

but they’d never named a child before.

What kind of name would bring him happiness and a long life?

They had no idea.

So they went to the wise old priest at the temple

and asked him to choose a truly auspicious name.

The priest smiled and said:

“There is a word in the sacred sutras—Jugemu.

It means endless blessings, good fortune without end.

But wait, I have more…

How about Gokō-no-Surikire,

‘Five Eons Worn Away’?

Imagine this:

once every three thousand years a heavenly maiden descends,

brushing a giant boulder lightly with her silken robe.

When the rock finally wears away—

that is but a single eon.

Five eons, five times over—

a span beyond counting!”

The parents were thrilled.

“Wonderful! Let’s take all the lucky words!”

And so the boy received

the grandest, longest name anyone had ever heard:

Jugemu Jugemu Gokō-no-Surikire

Kaijari Suigyō no Suigyōmatsu Unraimatsu Fūraimatsu

Kūneru Tokoro ni Sumu Tokoro

Yabura Kōji no Burakōji

Paipo Paipo Paipo no Shūringan

Shūringan no Gūrindai

Gūrindai no Ponpokopī no

Ponpokonā no Chōkyūmei no Chōsuke

(A name of blessings that goes on and on,

as if time itself could never end.)

Thanks to such a magnificent name,

the boy grew up strong and full of life.

When he began going to the temple school,

he played with boundless energy—

sometimes even getting into little fights.

One day a neighbor child came crying:

“Waaah! Auntie! Auntie!

Jugemu Jugemu Gokō-no-Surikire

Kaijari Suigyō no Suigyōmatsu Unraimatsu Fūraimatsu

Kūneru Tokoro ni Sumu Tokoro

Yabura Kōji no Burakōji

Paipo Paipo Paipo no Shūringan

Shūringan no Gūrindai

Gūrindai no Ponpokopī no

Ponpokonā no Chōkyūmei no Chōsuke

hit me on the head

and gave me a huge bump!”

Father Hachigorō checked the child’s head.

“Hmm? There’s no bump at all!”

The child sniffled and said,

“Well… his name was so long

the bump got scared and went back in.”

And with that, the story comes neatly to an end.

O-ato ga yoroshii yō de.

(“A tidy finish, don’t you think?”)
