Last night in a dream
I am wandering on the surface of a wide river:
Walking in water as if on land,
Walking in sleep — and not quite in sleep,
I walk and see a dreadful dream:
A giant elephant comes my way.

That elephant was you — and you said:
“Ah, I seem to have met you somewhere before…”

But I grew so afraid, it’s true.
You may not believe it,
But such things happen only in dreams:
A premonition of loss.

You’re right. Then I got scared indeed —
For it was a dream, yet it seemed
That I’d been trapped inside, it seemed,
All alone — and I was scared.

It was a prophetic dream, I know.
You will leave.
You’ll abandon me and go,
On a different path, all your own.
Oh, darling, how I feel so alone.

Don’t laugh — I truly know it’s so,
My soul is full of this foreboding,
But
You do not listen to what I say.

Tomorrow you’ll say that in your dream
You saw me trudging through the dark.
You saw a light, but never spoke —
And that’s how you lost me, broke the bond.
You lost me and never found me again,
You found another, then walked away,
Went to her — and without me,
Your life became happy, you see.

. . .

So I spoke long ago.
Three months have passed since then, you know.
Today the dream has come to pass —
Yesterday you packed up and left at last,
Went your own, different way.

Oh, people, how I feel so alone.
