I went down to the river,

where the willow don’t weep,

That gal’s beaver done blocked me,

kept me out in the deep.

I begged and I pleaded,

Lord, I knocked on her door,

But her little beaver said,

"You don’t belong here no mo."

Oh, that sly little beaver,

workin’ through the night,

Stackin’ them branches,

keepin’ it locked tight.

I’d cross that river,

crawl on my hands and knees,

Just to feel that beaver

bring me sweet relief.

She got a smile like fire,

but her heart’s made of stone,

Her beaver done left me,

out here all alone.

I chopped at them branches,

I done cleared the land,

But her beaver just laughed,
