Lyrics
Make Me a Mess
Before the scent of paint has even dried,
I tear the edge of the canvas.
Perfection has always been something far away, hasn’t it?
The moment the world comes into focus, its outline turns into a lie.
In the mirror,
my only job seems to be reflecting light.
But the real me
leaves scratch marks on the side of the glass that never shows.
The camera pretends to record what’s “beautiful,”
choosing only the convenient angles.
But behind that,
the emotions lost to noise keep on screaming.
On the skin of a painting,
the thin brush traces a sanitary lie.
Beneath the hidden undercoat seeps
love, or blood—something like that, maybe.
What is virtue in reality, anyway?
Finding comfort in things lined up just right?
Or being able to smile while broken?
If it’s the latter, then I’m perfect.
Absurdity takes the shape of air,
and truth breathes quietly in the trash bin.
More than prettiness, it’s the cracked pixels
that I find truly dear.
So make me a mess.
Don’t bring me into focus.
So make me a mess.
This blur itself is my portrait.
Whether with tears or paint, I don’t care—
please, just like this,
please, just let me bleed into the paper.
The frame is smiling,
drawing a neat border, saying, “This is where the artwork ends.”
But I know—
outside of it, the dust, the damp, and the silence
are the real background.
Beneath the oily sheen shining under the lights,
the brushstrokes are still breathing.
The trembling I never wanted anyone to see
refuses to dry, still moving faintly.
Within the city cut into frames of film,
people are made to walk beautifully.
But it’s the ignored gum stains,
the exhaust-thickened air particles
that save me.
What is beauty, again?
Symmetry? Or standing tall even while breaking?
I’ll bet on the latter.
Because perfection is boring,
and imperfection is tender.
Truth laughs only
when the camera isn’t rolling.
In that moment someone says, “Did you get that?”
It wasn’t captured—
and that’s why it’s beautiful.
So make me a mess.
Destroy the composition, the ideals, the restraint—everything.
So make me a mess.
Smudge the layers of painted lies
with your fingertips—blend them, blur them—
and with the color of honesty that finally shows through,
with that color at last—paint it all over me.
I’ll stand upon it all.
Not on a mirror that reflects light,
but on mud that swallows it whole.
Stained, melting,
and still—
this is the most beautiful version of “me.”
