Lyrics
When we turn to the wisdom of the ancients, we discover that the Sun has always been more than a burning star in the heavens. In every tradition of sacred knowledge, the Sun was a symbol of spirit, of rebirth, of the eternal journey of the soul. The science that unites these mysteries has been called astroteology, the recognition that the heavens were not merely maps of stars but mirrors of the divine drama played out within the human being.
From Egypt to Greece, from India to the ancient Americas, the same pattern repeats: the Sun is born of a virgin, it descends into darkness, it is slain, and then rises again in glory. As Annie Besant reminds us in Esoteric Christianity, the life of the Sun was seen as the cosmic archetype of initiation. The disciple’s path was mapped upon the heavens themselves: to die with the Sun, to pass through darkness, and to rise again transformed.
C.H. Vail speaks of how the solar myth is not fiction but a veil: a poetic form that hides the deeper truths of initiation. December 25th, for instance, the so-called birthdate of Christ, of Mithras, and of many other solar saviors, corresponds not to a historical accident but to a cosmic necessity. At the winter solstice, the Sun is at its weakest, seemingly conquered by night. For three days it rests, motionless, until on December 25th it begins its ascent (with the sign of Virgo rising above the horizon). Thus the “birth” of the Sun is the rebirth of light in the world. The initiate, too, must pass through his own winter, his own death of the lower self, before rising into illumination.
Another interesting fact in this connection is that the animal adopted as the symbol of the Hero is the sign of the Zodiac in which the Sun is at the vernal equinox of his age, and this varies with the precession of the equinoxes. Thus Oannes and Jesus had the sign Pisces—the Fishes; Mithra and Osiris Taurus—the Bull; Jupiter-Ammoir Aries—the Lamb, etc., while Jesus is also represented as the Lamb (and crucified at the Vernal equinox).
Mircea Eliade often reminded us that myth is never “just a story,” but a sacred pattern reenacted. The virgin birth is not a biological impossibility but an esoteric symbol: it signifies that the higher self, the spiritual man, is born from the untouched, the pure, from Sophia, Isis, Shakti — the eternal feminine. Likewise, the death and resurrection of every solar deity — whether we name him Osiris, Apollo, Krishna, Dionysus, or Jesus — is the story of the human soul descending into matter, losing itself, and then, through initiation, conquering death by realizing its solar nature.
René Guénon described tradition as the bridge between the macrocosm and the microcosm. In this sense, the journey of the Sun across the zodiac is also the journey of man across the houses of his own being. The twelve signs are the twelve gates of the mysteries. Apollo’s chariot, driving the Sun through the heavens, becomes the vehicle of the initiate, who learns to harmonize his inner cosmos with the great celestial order.
In the Mithraic mysteries, the bull was slain — a sacrifice that marked the passing of the age of Taurus. In the Christian mysteries, the age of Pisces brought the symbol of the fish. Each shift of the heavens corresponded to a new chapter in the initiatory drama, revealing to the wise that history itself is a mirror of the stars.
But all these archetypes point to a single truth: that initiation is not merely the study of symbols, but their embodiment. The Sun is not simply worshiped; it is lived within. To “follow the Sun” is to ascend from ignorance to knowledge, from darkness to light, from the lower to the higher.
As Martin Lings so beautifully taught, symbols are the language of the eternal. They cannot be reduced to mere allegory, nor dismissed as primitive imagination. When the ancients spoke of the Sun as a god, they did not mean a burning disc in the sky — they meant that behind the material light lies the eternal light, and that man, by passing through his own inner solstices and equinoxes, might come to partake of it.
Thus, when we read the myths of solar deities — born of virgins, slain, resurrected, ascending to the heavens — we must not mistake them for borrowed legends or fanciful tales. They are the dramatization of initiation itself: the death of the profane man, and the birth of the solar man, the awakened being, radiant as the Sun.
The way of the Sun is the way of initiation. The ancient mysteries taught this through drama, through symbol, through ritual. Today we glimpse it in the myths, in the esoteric writings, in the echoes of forgotten temples...
👽: But the path itself is eternal. The Sun still rises, still falls, still dies, and is still reborn. And so too must we. ☀️
