Let’s Talk About Paper Shells
You know, there’s this word haribote—
a paper shell.
Looks the part, stands like it belongs,
but inside it’s all hollow,
a tap makes it thump and echo louder than it should.
The funny thing is,
deciding it’s just a paper shell
isn’t really anyone else’s job.
It’s a verdict whispered
by the little judge inside you.
Someone might shout, “This is fake!”
and the moment that voice reaches you,
if you quietly think,
“Yeah… just a paper shell,”
the shape of the world is already
shifting a little.
Some nights paper can seem harder than metal,
and the dullest, darkest surfaces
soak in the shadows
until they shine.
Strange, isn’t it?
Here’s the curious part:
the second you name it a fake,
that paper shell starts working overtime.
As if desperate to prove itself,
it breathes deeper than the real thing
and stands there even more boldly.
Your own fingertips grow uneasy,
because behind the thin wall
a heartbeat starts to murmur—
a real tremor
wearing the mask of an imitation.
And suddenly
you can’t tell which side is which.
Morning comes,
and sunlight does its perfect little trick.
It strokes the surface
softly, almost kindly,
yet with a quiet cruelty,
bringing out a subtle pulse.
That tiny vibration isn’t saying
“Soon this will peel away,”
but rather,
“Maybe it’s fine to keep living
right here, dressed in decoration.”
Being a paper shell
isn’t proof of emptiness;
it’s proof that there’s still
a margin left inside the void.
Think about it—
a haribote is tougher than it looks,
carrying something
even when it seems to hold nothing at all.
In the end, the choice is always yours.
You can harden it,
afraid of collapse,
or embrace the hollow
just as it is.
Either way,
the moment you whisper,
“This is fake,”
that whisper repaints the world
and pops a brand-new truth
into existence.
So, me?
I can’t dislike paper shells.
They show you flashes of wonder
the so-called “real” things never do.
Honestly, I think most of the world
is built of haribote anyway—
and maybe that’s exactly
why it keeps turning so well.
