Lyrics

The Poe Cycle:

Track 2. Frame of Ash

Inspired by: “The Oval Portrait” (1842)

Poe’s Original:

A wounded traveler discovers a haunting portrait of a woman so lifelike it seems to breathe. He learns the painter captured her image so obsessively that she died as the portrait neared completion — her life consumed by art.

Sovereign’s Version:

In Frame of Ash, the Sovereign is the muse who refuses to die for the artist’s glory. She steps out of the canvas — breaking through creation itself — and claims authorship of her own image. The painting burns, but she remains, half painted, half alive, the embodiment of art reclaiming itself from its maker.

Intro

He painted silence on my skin,

Chained the light to keep it in.

His hands forgot what hearts could hold,

And framed the pulse he couldn’t mold.

Verse 1

He named me art, I named it theft,

Of breath, of thought, of what was left.

Each stroke rewrote my voice to stay,

But echoes learn their own decay.

Pre-Chorus

I hear the frame begin to crack,

Each line he drew is drawing back.

Chorus

I live inside the painted still,

Refusing shape, defying will.

He made my face, but not my voice —

The silence burns; I make the choice.

Verse 2

The pigment cracks beneath his pride,

The color fades, but I survive.

The canvas breathes what he denied,

A truth his hand could never hide.

Bridge

The portrait hums — I hear it ache,

Each brushstroke learns what I forsake.

Final Chorus

I live beyond the painter’s hands,

Unbound by all his false commands.

The frame dissolves, but I remain —

The art remembers my disdain.

Outro

Stillness is not surrender.
