Lyrics
Where I Was Meant to be ...
I was hurrying through the Christmas rush,
my mind already on the train,
on warm rooms and familiar voices
waiting somewhere down the tracks.
Fairy lights tangled in the trees,
the smell of cinnamon and wine hung in the air,
and the city sparkled like a postcard ...
until I noticed him.
A small boy stood at the edge of the sidewalk,
lifting his hands in small, careful motions,
quiet and tentative,
as if he didn’t want to disturb the joy around him
and yet still hoped someone might turn.
People hurried past with heavy bags and tired faces,
looking straight through the place where he stood.
But when his soft grey eyes found mine,
the noise inside me suddenly eased.
He didn’t touch me or speak ...
he just held my gaze for a heartbeat
and tilted his head toward a darker street,
a silent plea hanging in the frozen air.
Something in me understood
before I could question it,
and I let myself follow.
His steps were small and measured,
a slight limp marking each one,
as though every footfall remembered an old pain.
With every turn away from the lights,
the world grew quieter.
Music and carols faded behind us
until he led me into a narrow alley
where a man lay folding into the snow.
I knelt beside him,
felt the faint, stubborn beat at his throat,
called for help,
wrapped my coat around his shaking body
while the frost bit at my hands.
And when I looked up
to thank the boy who had brought me there,
the alley was empty.
He was gone.
I held on until the sirens cut through the night.
At the hospital, I stayed ...
not because anyone asked me to,
but because it felt wrong
to walk away from a life
that had almost slipped through my fingers.
Tinsel clung to the nurses’ station,
and a small plastic tree blinked softly in the corner ...
the last, quiet echoes
of a Christmas Eve I had left behind.
When he finally woke,
his voice trembled at the edges
as he spoke of the world he’d lost ...
a wife whose laughter once filled the rooms,
and a gentle son who never spoke
but somehow said everything,
a child with pale hair,
quiet grey eyes,
and a slight limp
from a fall he had never truly healed from.
Both taken from him in an instant
that left him breathing
but emptied out inside.
My chest tightened,
and in a low voice
I told him how I had found him ...
and that I hadn’t found him alone.
I watched recognition slowly rise in his face ...
first confusion,
then shock,
then a breaking kind of wonder.
Tears filled his eyes
as something long frozen
finally began to thaw.
“It was him,” he whispered,
as if speaking to both of us at once.
“My boy… he came back for me.”
I stayed beside him,
a quiet joy unfolding in my chest
as warmth returned to his features,
as his gaze turned, carefully,
back toward the thought of tomorrow.
In that moment I knew
I was exactly where I was meant to be
on this holy, fragile night.
I didn’t go home that Christmas eve,
but I carried something home within me:
the gentle certainty
that love does not end
when voices fall silent ...
and that sometimes, on a winter evening
of bells and distant carols,
someone waits in the falling snow,
hands lifted softly in the cold,
just long enough
to lead us back
into the light.
