Lyrics
It happened in the middle of the day in Bakhmut....
Just two soldiers...
they didn’t shout,
didn’t speak.
The door
didn’t last long.
One kick and it folded like cardboard.
She said the first thing
they did wasn’t to search.
Wasn’t to threaten.
One of them raised his rifle and emptied half a magazine into the piano. The sound cracked through the walls, bits of ivory and wood flying into the curtains. Chords bled out in strange bursts, E minor, silence, then something like a scream in D.
Her father stood up,
He said her name,
And one of them shot him in the chest, No reason.
(Instrumental Interlude)
The light from the window had caught the dust in the air, made it look like gold falling through smoke.
They didn’t stay long.
One of them pulled open the kitchen drawer, took the two boxes of cigarettes, then tucked the microwave under his arm. The other spotted the motorbike key on the hook by the door, pocketed it, and dragged the vacuum cleaner out behind him.
