My therapist gave me homework Tuesday afternoon

Said "Write to someone who supports you, make it soon"

Thought about my mama but she'd ask about the ring

My best friend moved away, can't think of anything

So I sat down at my table with a pen that night

Stared at blank paper trying hard to get it right

Then I saw you waiting patient there upon my shelf

Captain Morgan, you have never judged myself

Dear Captain Morgan, you're the one who's always there

You don't ghost me, don't leave me, you're always in my care

Aisle seven, shelf three, my most reliable man

My therapist wanted support system, you're the best that I can

You got three hundred years of history to your name

While my exes barely lasted through a football game

So here's my therapy homework, signed and sealed with pain

You're spiced and interesting, not boring like the rest

You've got depth to you baby, thirty-five's the best

No surprises with you, it's right there on the label

While real men play their games underneath the table

Sure you make my mornings hurt just a little bit

My therapist calls this my avoidance behavior

I call it commitment to my one and only savior

She asked me if I wrote that letter down

I said "Yes ma'am, and it turned my life around"

She asked me who's the one I can depend upon

I said "Captain Morgan, been my friend so long"

She looked confused, asked "Is he family or friend?"

I said "He's a pirate with a loyal heart to lend"

She wrote some notes and asked "How often do you meet?"

I said "Every weekend and when life gets bittersweet"

Dear Captain Morgan, you're my therapy confession

My coping mechanism wrapped up in obsession

I know I need real people, I know this isn't right

But you're the only one who showed up every night

My therapist says I've got some work to do

But until I figure out me, I'll stick with you
