A rooster stood on a fencepost at dawn,
feathers puffed, chest proud,
singing the same tune it’d heard from its father,
who heard it from the barn radio,
who stole it from a billboard,
who bought it from Nashville.
“Yeehaw,” it clucked. “Real music comes from dirt.”
A flock of sparrows landed nearby,
gelled up, choreographed,
each with perfect hair and a signature wink.
They lip-synced a mating call and called it harmony.
“We speak for the forest’s heart,” they chirped.
“The girls scream. Isn’t that truth?”
I gnawed a root and squinted.
“You,” I said to the rooster,
“are a boot in a puddle pretending it’s the sea.”
“And you,” I said to the sparrows,
“are perfume on a carcass singing falsetto.”
The rooster flapped like it meant something.
The sparrows pouted in autotune.
I flicked a pebble.
It hit no one.
Didn’t need to.
“Sing louder,” I yawned. “The predators love noise.”
Then I vanished into the tall grass,
where no one claps,
but the wind remembers who lied.
