Some words don’t just reach you…
They break you open so you can finally breathe.

A day with my friend, just chillin plans set in our hand
She said “Rose, look at me,” with a touch of her hand
I don’t stare in eyes, nah, I keep that closed
But this time, for some reason, I let it unfold.

And she said
“Please don’t shut down,” voice low, but it shook me
“Remember what happened when I did?” and she looked through me
Not around me, not past nah, through the walls I built
And I felt that hit in my soul, in my gut, like guilt.

Don’t shut down those words echoed in my chest
Broke down, couldn’t fight, I confessed
Why’d I look? Why’d I let it all slip?
Tears hit my lip, heart losing grip.

People told me that before, like it’s just cliché
But this time it landed in a different kinda way
She saw the pain I wear like silent skin
Like I try to smile, but she saw within.

And damn
Why’d I meet her eyes, why’d I break so fast?
I’m stronger than that, I’m built to outlast
I’ve held my feels like bricks in a flood
But “don’t shut down” cracked ’em open with love.

It wasn’t pity it was real.
She knew.
Like really knew.
And I ain’t used to that kind of truth.

When she said those words I quickly turned around
Tears poured down she said, “Look at me, Rose.”
“You’re like family to me. I love you, and I’m here for you.”
I couldn’t speak only tears came down too true

Don’t shut down yeah, I broke that day
But maybe breaking was the only way
To rebuild, to heal, to finally be found
All from five words: “please Rose don’t shut down.”
