Mazu (also called Mazu Po, “Granny Mazu”) is a sea goddess widely worshiped in Taiwan, southern China, and other coastal regions. She is believed to protect fishermen, sailors, and travelers on the sea.
According to legend, Mazu was a young woman named Lin Moniang from Fujian Province during the Song Dynasty (10th century). She was kind, wise, and brave, often helping people in danger at sea. After her death, people believed her spirit continued to guard them, so she was honored as a goddess.
Today, Mazu temples can be found across Taiwan and Asia. Every year, thousands of pilgrims join grand processions (like the famous Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage in Taiwan) to show devotion and seek blessings for safety, health, and peace.
