“The Book of Tea” by Kakuzo Okakura is a 1906 philosophical essay that uses the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu) as a gateway to the aesthetics and spirituality of Japanese culture. Okakura explains how tea culture embodies the principles of Zen and Taoism, and introduces the concepts of wabi (austere simplicity) and sabi (the beauty of aging and imperfection). Through the culture of tea, Okakura reveals a Japanese aesthetic that embraces the subtle, the fleeting, and the profound beauty found in the modest and the imperfect.
