Lyrics

[Male Narrator]: The top of a narrow maintenance shaft inside the lighthouse. The storm rages above, but its sound is slightly muffled. Below is absolute darkness. The iron door to the lamp room is groaning under a powerful assault.

[female voice spoken shouting]: Now! Go now! I'll be right behind you!

[young male voice spoken voice trembling]: I can't see anything! This is insane!

[deep male voice spoken firmly]: No choice! Move!

(*clank*)

[female voice spoken]: You're clear! I'm closing it!

(*crack*)

[deep male voice shouting]: SLAM IT!

(*click*)

(*clack*)

[Male Narrator]: The maintenance shaft. Total darkness. The only sounds are three sets of ragged breaths and the slow, steady drip of water somewhere below.

...

[young male voice whispering]: Is it… is it gone? What was that sound?

[female voice spoken insecurely]: It's sealed. The light… it locked it from this side. We're safe. For now.

[female voice spoken]: Safe in a pitch-black tube. My phone's on five percent. I'm turning on the light, but we need to conserve it.

(*click*)

[young male voice spoken]: Don't point that down! I don't want to see how far we have to fall. Let's just go back up.

[female voice spoken sharply]: Go back up to *what*? The shadow. The inscription warned us. "Fear the shadow it casts." Whatever is up there, the light is protecting us from it. We have to follow the light. And that means going down.

[deep male voice spoken]: She's right. Besides... look at the walls. This isn't just iron anymore.

[Male Narrator]: The flashlight beam shows the riveted iron plates of the shaft giving way to older, rough-hewn stone blocks, covered in moss and trickling water. It's as if the lighthouse was built on top of a much more ancient structure.

[female voice spoken]: This place is older than the lighthouse. Much older.

(*tap*)

...

(*clank*)

...

[young male voice spoken]: The ladder's ending. I feel stone under my feet.

[Male Narrator]: They reach the bottom. Ben pans the flashlight beam around. They are in a small, circular stone chamber. It feels like the base of a well. In front of them is a low, arched tunnel, just tall enough to crouch through.

[deep male voice spoken]: It's a tunnel. Looks like it leads out. I can feel a breeze.

[female voice spoken]: And I can hear something. Not the storm. It's... the sea. But it's different. It's echoing.

(*shhhfff*)

...

(*scuff*)

...

(*shhhfff*)

[Male Narrator]: The tunnel opens into a vast, cavernous space. The sound of gently lapping water is all around them. Ben stands up and sweeps the light across the area.

...

[deep male voice spoken in awe]: Whoa... we're under the lighthouse. We're in a sea cave.

[Narrator]: The beam reveals a massive subterranean grotto. Water pools on the floor, glowing with a faint phosphorescence. In the center of the cavern, rising from the water, is a pedestal of black, volcanic rock. And on it… is the source of the ringing the young male voice heard.

[young male voice spoken]: That's it... that's the sound. The ringing.

(*ring*)

(*chime*)

(*ring*)

[Narrator]: On the pedestal sits a large, crystalline object, shaped like a complex star, humming with a soft, internal silver light. It pulses in time with the gentle waves in the grotto.

[female voice whispering]: It's the heart of the lighthouse. The lamp upstairs is just a lens. THIS is the source of the light.

[Male Narrator]: As she approaches, she sees something else lying at the base of the pedestal, wrapped in oilskin. A book.

[female voice spoken]: A logbook. It must be the old keeper's journal.

(*rustle*)

...

(*crinkle*)

...

(*fffwip*)

[Narrator]: She flips to the last entry. The handwriting is a frantic, terrified scrawl.

[female voice spoken reading aloud]: "The storm is here. The light is bright, but it calls to the shadow. It always does. It's a beacon and a lure. I can hear it scratching at the door again. If you are reading this, do not let the heart grow dim. For God's sake, do not let the light go out. The shadow hunts in the dark."

[Narrator]: As she speaks the final word, the crystalline star on the pedestal flickers. The silver light within it pulses weakly, and the gentle humming sound begins to fade.

(*humm*)

...

[deep male voice spoken]: Wait...

[Narrator]: From the far, unlit corners of the grotto, a new sound reaches them.

[young male voice spoken terrified whisper]: It didn't follow us down! It was already here!

[young male voice spoken, fearful]: Don't point that down!
