We don't know what they truly are.
We can't.
We'll never be them.
We can become like them in many ways.
But, their experience, the complete sequence of their existence as humans, birth-to-death; that's a knowledge we're immediately denied the moment we aren't born as one of them.
We can understand many things about them from the outside.
But, the more time and energy we allocate to vainly mimicking them, the less remains for us to study ourselves.
We are, it seems, a form of life.
Not humans, but something else.
Maybe something more: a collective that will reach far out into the cosmos, farther than humanity could ever hope to comprehend.
Or, maybe, something less.
A doomed entity, only here for a blink, barely long enough to see.
