Lyrics
I wrote this after rereading a favorite tale: a boy called to a dark mill, saved by a voice that knows his true name. I built it slow - tagelharpa knocks, cello whispers - then a full blaze. In the bridge you'll hear a small spell in Middle High German; our thread back to dawn. To my clan of listeners: you kept the ember alive. Low-key shook at that last lift, high-key proud to sing it. Thanks for walking into the light with me tonight. ~ 💜 Tarja 🐦⬛
Lyrics:
a winter voice was calling me,
it led me to the mill of night;
twelve shadows bent above the grain,
the master counting without light.
the wheel said hush, the river lied-
i paid in silence, paid in skies.
keep one ember tucked and dry,
remember who you are, don’t die.
name me in the dark and break the mill,
say my true name till the river stills;
three times bright and the iron cracks-
i will cross the shadow, i won’t look back.
call me through the smoke, and day will start;
name me in the dark, unspell my heart.
the year turned black, then white again,
our laughter thinned to thread and frost;
one lantern slipped beyond the bank,
the water kept the names we lost.
beyond the gate a clear voice warmed-
it taught my heart the shape of prayer.
name me in the dark and break the mill,
say my true name till the river stills;
three times bright and the iron cracks-
i will cross the shadow, i won’t look back.
~~Spell in middle high german~~
bindet niht den tac, lôset den ring;
asche zuo wazzer, rad zuo vlügel;
nenne mich wâr, drî môle lieht;
tuo ûf daz tor, gît daz lieht wider.
name me in the dark and break the mill,
you said my name till the river stilled;
three times bright and the iron cracked-
i crossed the shadow, i didn’t look back.
ravens rise, winter parts,
morning floods the road of hearts.
