Formed in 1972, Sweet Jaspers didn’t meet at a party or a protest, but in the waiting room of a Los Angeles bankruptcy court. As unpaid session musicians for a defunct label, the quartet decided to pool their "severance" a van full of high-end recording gear and form their own band instead of suing for back pay.

For years, they were the "musician’s band" technically flawless but commercially quiet. That changed in 1978 with the release of their fifth studio album, No Roses.

While previous records were known for sunny, easy-listening harmonies, the band took a darker turn for this release. The breakout single, "Small Thing," captures this new edge, pairing their signature velvet-smooth production with lyrics about paranoia and decaying trust. It became the unexpected anthem of the summer, finally turning the eternal session players into legitimate rock stars.
