И надо оставлять пробелы

В судьбе, а не среди бумаг,

Места и главы жизни целой

Отчеркивая на полях.

И окунаться в неизвестность,

И прятать в ней свои шаги,

Как прячется в тумане местность,

Когда в ней не видать ни зги.

Другие по живому следу

Пройдут твой путь за пядью пядь,

Но пораженья от победы

Ты сам не должен отличать.

И должен ни единой долькой

Не отступаться от лица,

Но быть живым, живым и только,

To Be Famous Is Unseemly

To be famous is unseemly.

It does not lift one truly high.

There’s no need to build an archive,

Or tremble over manuscripts.

The goal of art is self-surrender,

Not clamoring for brief success.

Shameful it is, when you mean nothing,

To be the talk on every tongue.

One must live without imposture,

Live so that, in the end,

You draw the love of space itself,

And hear the call of future days.

One must leave blanks in life’s own story,

Not just between the written lines,

Places, and whole chapters, kept

As margins carved from time.

One must plunge into the unknown,

Hide one’s steps within its fog—

As landscape hides itself in mist

When no light breaks the dark.

Others will walk your living path,

Tracing inch by inch your way—

But you must never tell the difference

Between your victories and defeats.

And not by even the smallest fraction

Must you betray your own true self—

But be alive, alive and only,

Alive and only, to the end.
