The glass is freezing to the touch

The winter dark is absolute

I pull the heavy curtains shut

But shadows still begin to root

A silhouette against the glass

A silent watcher in the frost

I wait for this creeping dread to pass

But know my sanctuary is lost

Outside the window, in the pale street light

Something is breathing in the dead of night

Through woven fabric, through the drawn-down blind

It seeks the terror buried in my mind

I feel the stare, I feel the chill

Standing so impossibly still

I turn my back but feel the eyes

Piercing the fabric, sharp as knives

My pulse is racing, a frantic beat

A cold sweat soaking through the sheet

Is it a phantom of my fractured sleep?

Or something foul that starts to creep?

The windowpane is thin and frail

Against the watcher beyond the veil
