Lyrics

[Intro] – epic orchestral swell, distant drums, soft male choir hums

[Whispered] Slowly comes again the celebration of fifty-six,

[Whispered] In October, our song will honor it all.

[Verse 1]

[Verse] What can I say, who was not alive then,

[Verse] I tell of those who lived with brave hearts.

[Verse] There was a young boy, proud Hungarian child,

[Verse] Who stood for freedom, took up arms when needed.

[Verse 2]

[Verse] József Nyitrai, blessed be his name, my friend departed,

[Verse] But his story remained with me.

[Verse] Let me tell you what is needed when trouble rises,

[Shout] Courage must be born, a hero’s heart for the people.

[Verse 3]

[Verse] He was a boy from Pest, a true Hungarian, if today it were fifty-six,

[Verse] The modern media kids would squeal and run if they heard his steps,

[Verse] Good, brave Józsi.

[Verse 4]

[Verse] From Russian oppression, many had enough,

[Verse] To raise arms for freedom, their hearts unafraid.

[Choir] They united bravely, hearts for truth,

[Choir] Against the storm they stood, none were afraid.

[Verse 5]

[Verse] Józsi as a young man did not hesitate to act for country and homeland.

[Verse] He sought and found a weapon.

[Verse] Found an old Mauser discarded by the police,

[Strings] Accurate, but fast shooting and reloading was unnecessary.

[Verse 6]

[Verse] József used it, fighting for the homeland.

[Verse] But a faster one was needed, for the awaited freedom.

[Verse] He took the next from a Russian soldier, a PPSH submachine gun,

[Shout] Heartwarming. Bullets flew, though not precise.

[Verse 7]

[Verse] Still, in battle, it was better than the Mauser.

[Verse] Not perfect, yet battles raged,

[Verse] Molotov cocktails flew, many Russians fled from tanks and hid,

[Verse] But Pest’s brave boys went after them.

[Verse 8]

[Verse] On the tank was a machine gun, a Degtyaryov DT,

[Verse] Józsi lifted it and broke the way forward,

[Guitar] The DT was accurate, delivering fast death if you were in its path.

[Verse 9]

[Verse] He fought with it as long as he could, but the cause fell,

[Verse] The country fell to its knees.

[Verse] He had to flee, death awaited him at home,

[Verse] With one companion, he left the Western border.

[Verse 10]

[Verse] They went to France, awaited by the legion, he built a career and reached high rank.

[Verse] In 2006 I met him, old by then,

[Verse] From the 1980s he no longer spoke Hungarian,

[Verse] We spoke by phone, tears came at the Hungarian words, and I was proud he could be my friend.

[Verse 11]

[Verse] We played Freelancer, met there, an accidental Hungarian word he read,

[Verse] His name was Anonymous, helped many, became our friend, we talked so much.

[Verse] I could finally know him, see who he was.

[Verse 12]

[Whispered] I often called home, but he resisted and said:

[Whispered] “We stood for the homeland, gave our blood, the people betrayed us, we fled as guilty.

[Whispered] Nothing has changed at home, nothing at all.

[Whispered] I will never set foot on that ground again.

[Whispered] They took my mother’s life for my loyalty, Hungarian pride is worth nothing in my eyes.”

[Verse 13]

[Verse] Years ago he passed, death caught him too, but I remember and tell his life.

[Verse] They were heroes who fought for us, not their fault that tomorrow changed.

[Verse 14]

Chorus – full choir + orchestral metal

[Chorus] They were betrayed by foolish Hungarian people,

[Chorus] Exile and mortal threat was their fate.

[Chorus] They were the last to stand here, who fought for freedom, for homeland, redeeming all.

[Chorus] They fought for us, and for your future. Yet this is what the country valued for patriotic pride.

[Outro – cinematic strings + choir whispers]

[Whispered] Remember them, as I do,

[Whispered] In October, I shed a tear for them,

[Whispered] Containing everything, a bitter awakening,

[Whispered] Hungarians do not need freedom, nor hope.
