Printed on a screen

Another row of data

In a corporate machine

Clock in, clock out

Grinding for a check

Just another daily quest

Trying to earn respect

Then I hear a startup sound

And everything resets

The world starts calling out

Like it hasn't lost me yet

I'm a hero on weekends

A legend after nine

Defender of the universe

As long as I've got time

I save princesses and planets

And occasionally the day

Then Monday morning comes around

And puts my cape away

At work they send an email

Saying valued team

Then cut another budget

And cancel every dream

But in the world online

The king calls me his own

The kingdom needs a hero now

It's dangerous to go alone

One place I'm employee

Four-seven-six-two-three

The other says Player One

And hands the quest to me

One world needs another report

Before the end of day

One world needs a dragon slain

The princess needs me today

One asks if I've hit my goals

And filled the proper forms

The other hands me magic steel

And sends me into storms

I've slain a thousand monsters

I've answered every call

But somehow none of that experience

Counts at work at all

I'm a hero on weekends

A legend after nine

I've saved the world a hundred times

But that won't help me climb

The ladder at the office

Or earn another raise

Nobody checks for dragon kills

These days

I'm a hero on weekends

And maybe this is true

The heroes in those game worlds

Feel a lot like me and you

Back into reality

Where life moves slow and plain

But somewhere there's a kingdom

Waiting for me again

My save file's right where I left it

Like an old familiar friend
