The crows in "Passazh" hold their debates upon the ledge,
Dissent on Brodsky and on Raphael's name.
They peck at crumbs from kind old babushkas' hands,
And readjust their top hats where they list and tilt.
I've met them in the canyoned yards, the brick-walled wells,
Where fog hangs like a grandfather's smoked-through tailcoat.
They argue over Pushkin, bicker and they brawl,
Compose their verse—no vowels, just a raw, stark "Cwwww!"
And on a Saturday, when the Neva falls asleep,
They fly to HMS "Aurora" from a crow's grand ball!
There, to the anchor's creak, a pattern is revealed,
As they discuss the city's latest, flooding plight.
"Cawwrl Cawwwrlovich, you're right—the atmosphere's a hothouse!
But still—what pathos here! And how much dreary routine!"
And sighing, they look up to Bronze Horseman's height,
Where pigeons are the plebs, and crows—the true elite.
One time, outside Café Beranger, by the glass,
I overheard their spat: "My dear Cwwlara, don't you find
That Dostoevsky is a slightly hysterical man?"
A question sharp, a most attractive pair.
But do not think them merely chatterers,
For when the clouds tear on the Peter and Paul spire,
They spread their wings—so black, so full of weighty grace—
And as a mob—fly off to find a "Baltika" beer.
It's quite a sight to see: a crow, a dean of arts,
Deliver lectures to the bridge's gulls:
"You all are decadents! Oh yes, madame, you are!
Think broader, wider—it's not all so simple!"
Inside the Hermitage, a truly feral scene—
They critique Rembrandt: "His light is just plain kitsch!"
"Malevich is a titan! That Black Square's a sign,
A metaphor for life, our wingéd kin!"
But sometimes, even they are gripped by a deep gloom,
They perch on statues, balconies, and stare
With bleak despair into the city's grayish murk...
And they remember... Oxxxymiron...
All in all, these birds possess a certain wit,
They don't just caw, but hold intelligent discourse.
Though they can peck your temple with a fearsome blow—
These crows of Petersburg... The intelligentsia.
