The Promises

I read the letter on our bed one more time,

Traced every line and replayed what was mine.

You tried to leave a promise, tried to build a bridge,

But your heart ran out of ink somewhere at the edge.

The pen touched down on paper, but the page stayed white,

You couldn't even make it through the last goodbye.

I thought we were building a house on a hill,

But cracks found the foundation and the summer got still.

The promises went blind in the middle of the night!

Chasing after shadows, chasing after light!

You can't write it down, you can't make it stay,

When the ink inside your chest just fades away.

Our conversation lost its legs and hit the floor,

We can't even carry words out to the door.

I wanted to repair it, I wanted to remain,

But even the air balled up its fists and walked away.

We're breathing the same oxygen, but something changed,

And the silence in the kitchen screams louder every day.
