Morning breaking soft across the dash

Highway lines rolling by so fast

Coffee riding in the cup holder ring

Sunlight catching dust in everything

Her head resting lightly on the glass

Sleeping through the miles rolling past

Radio talking low without a sound

He reached over once and turned it down

Morning moving slow

Exit ramp coming up

A little ways down the road

One hand on the wheel

One eye on the sky

And every now and then

A smile crossed his eyes

Truck tires humming through the county lines

Fields still silver from the nighttime

He drove gentler when the road turned rough

Like waking her was reason enough

Sun came through the windshield clean and gold

Lit the strands of hair against the cold

She never stirred the whole way through

Just breathed easy like she trusted him to

To the backroads again

He never said much

Just watched the world roll by

Then the blacktop narrowed by the trees

Mailbox leaning in the morning breeze

He slowed down near a gravel turn

Like he already knew where the road would curve

She shifted softly but stayed asleep

He looked her way and the smile came brief

Then disappeared back into the day

As the truck rolled on through the waking haze

Down a quiet road

Just sunlight through the windshield

And peace beside him for a while
